Wayfinding in your community is simpler at home, as it’s familiar to you. It would be more difficult if you were suddenly transported to another community that you’ve never been to before. Because of a new job, maybe that job has remote work to do in another community on occasion. A person from a remote community goes to the health authority’s home city for treatment. This is most commonly not always long-term, but return tickets are not the same day. Plenty of people arrive in our town of Prince George for diverse medical treatments. It is the hometown of Northern Health. This is because of the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC). Some come in via ambulance because of a closed emergency room in the region nearby. They spend a few days in a community unknown to them while waiting for a ride home. They look for an affordable meal, entertainment within ‘walkable’ distance, or any diverse destination away from the hospital.

Find your way

The average person can travel independently thanks to Northern Health Connections. They move between the diverse health authorities of our province through that service. This includes Northern Health’s far north communities of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. It extends as far south as Vancouver, British Columbia. It passes through quite a few of Canada’s Health Authorities, including multiple BC and Yukon regions. Passengers enjoy a comfortable, scenic ride. The route stops at hospitals to transfer passengers. They can also use private transportation. Several public bus lines are available. Additionally, there are connecting airports. Even ridesharing between communities with services like Poparide. UHNBC has a popular quality eatery in the restaurant, open 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m., Tim Horton’s, in the hospital and all over the city. Get out and explore. The food is much better than what the hospital serves. Hospital food has slightly improved in recent years in the hospitals along the way to Vancouver. But sometimes a walk or roll for even a medicinal puff off property is mentally stabilizing. How do you find your way around a community?

City Transit

Many communities along the route of Northern Health Connections have public transportation available. In British Columbia, through BC Transit. Highways have other forms of public transportation out of Prince George with connections to other communities in all directions. It offers an affordable non-accessible route between Prince George and Terrace, BC, too. It also provides transit options to Prince Rupert from Terrace via intercity public transportation. A bus driver is a good source of local or highway information. In 2024, if you have a mobile device, Google has Wayfinding abilities. You also need a stable wireless connection or data with no limits. Simply type in where you wish to go. Many forms of transport are listed to get you there, sometimes with access information displayed. You can ask people on the street, too.

Taxis/shuttle/Rideshare services

Too simple, but not as affordable. Call local numbers. Call them to discuss how to get to you. In Prince George, we have 2 options. 250-564-4444 has an accessible ride, but that must be booked 24 hrs in advance, at least. They have an App for your devices. At once or as close to that as they’ll arrive. 250-563-3333 is our other original taxi service; they also have an App to use. Let them know your destination. Airport Shuttle Service is available if you need those services or to the airport. It is affordable. Scheduling information found onsite, for Prince George. They require notice of your needs well in advance of your trip. Apps can be used to call Rideshare companies like URide.,
